The organic waste material may be used to produce biogas through anaerobic digestion, in line with the circular economy principle and maximising the use of existing resources. The resulting gas may be used as such or undergo a purification process to upgrade it to biomethane, which has comparable quality properties to natural gas and can, therefore, be easily introduced into the gas network.
Support to renewable gases of biological origin at EU level should continue, recognising their contribution to the decarbonisation of the energy system.
Biogas and other renewable gases can be used in power plants driven by gas turbines – both to produce power only or in cogeneration mode. EUTurbines underlines the importance of continued support to renewable gases of biological origin at EU level and the need for the revised Renewable Energy Directive to further recognise their contribution to a decarbonised and integrated energy system.
