Methane Emissions
On the way to climate-neutrality, the pressure to reduce GHG emissions is not limited to CO2 emissions. Methane emissions, of special relevance for the gas sector, will now be specifically targeted, as outlined in the EU Methane Strategy. Foreseen measures should cover the entire gas value chain – from production to end-user, including power generation. EUTurbines supports the efforts of the entire gas sector to actively reduce methane emissions along the supply chain.
Gas turbines are used in both power generation as well as in production sites, midstream operations and compressor stations. In power generation, methane emissions are negligible under normal operation conditions. For the gas sector, turbine manufacturers have developed different solutions that can be used to reduce fugitive emissions – retrofitting feasibility on existing equipment is plant specific and applicability shall be evaluated on a case by case basis.
